My visual and sound work examines the veneers of a surrounding culture, the evolving landscape and the possible psychological and social impacts of these collisions. I use media cross-sections, slices and samples as source footage to then be recombined as larger collaged and fabricated pieces. I make use of recycled, home improvement and craft materials in addition to digital technologies. Thematically I would describe my process as connecting memory and the unconscious to that of the conscious world through objects, images, and sounds.
My photography functions as an archive. The bulk of the information reflects to me patterns that I may not be consciously aware of. I look for patterns in organization, communication and control. Erased graffiti on stucco walls in gentrifying neighborhoods. Aerial views of constructed space and its relationship to the natural landscape. And parking lot tourism in the American Southwest. From these investigations, I am able to further filtrate my ideas through media-based installation and site-specific interventions.
The choice of materials and medium formats will vary from project to project and because much of my work is produced for specific exhibitions, it tends to not only be site-specific but use-specific. I am interested in involving my audience either by immersing them in an environment with projected images or in a piece with an incorporated sound element. Either way, I am much more comfortable producing time-based pieces; something with a vibration or an inherent life to it. Many pieces that I create are interactive on a micro scale; the work involves the audience, but requests more of a passive participation. Situations are constructed that allow the audience to explore, though their interaction does not generate the piece itself. With sound I am attracted to its physicality. its capacity for collective cultural memory associations and emotional moods it can evoke. A reoccurring thread in my sound work has been the use of the human voice and language. Currently I have been experimenting with my own voice in order to simulate other sounds.
